The Sands Centre in Carlisle, North West England is looking for a new Arts & Events Manager to manage the entire arts and events programme, shaping the future of leisure and entertainment within the City of Carlisle. The Sands Centre plays host to around 200 shows and events every year including West End theatre productions, ballet and opera, not to mention major rock, pop and comedy artists and the region’s biggest pantomime. Undergoing a £20 million redevelopment, The Sands Centre is expected to cater for 1 million visits per year – be it to use the gym, pool, extensive catering and conference facilities or see one of the many shows and events. The venue is operated by GLL, the UK’s largest public leisure operator and a charitable social enterprise who reinvest back into communities, projects and people.

As Arts & Events Manager, you’ll develop the long-term strategies for events across the Centre ensuring financial viability from a programme of events that meet the needs of the local community as well as attracting people from all over the North West. You’ll be a real self-starter and will be given autonomy to run and development your own department doing everything from budget management to target setting, staff management and even producing your own shows.

You’ll thrive on variety and work well under pressure; one minute you could be briefing the team on the week’s events and the next, you’ll be talking to promoters about bringing a major artist to Carlisle. Naturally, you’ll come from an arts / events / entertainment background and will have experience of successfully introducing new events, contract negotiation, events programming and marketing. You should also be IT literate and a great communicator – both written and verbal – as you’ll work with a range of stakeholders from local centre teams to entourages and management of big-name stars and the senior team at GLL.

In return, we offer all the support and a range of benefits you’d expect from the UK’s largest public leisure operator including: ongoing training and development, pension scheme, discounted membership at all our leisure centres, ride to work scheme and the opportunity to join our Society and have a say in how we operate – not to mention a great social scene.

If you’d like to ensure The Sands Centre is the first choice for leisure and entertainment activities in the region, apply now

All pay rates are subject to skills, experience, qualifications and location.

To be shortlisted for the role, internal applicants will need to demonstrate their commitment to GLL by becoming a Society member where eligible.
