About The Role
Working alongside the Displays Curator, the LSS Technician/Aquarist will be responsible for the ongoing daily maintenance and operation of all facility related life support systems (LSS). As a part of the Displays team, this role will also be responsible for aspects of the daily care and feeding of a diverse collection of freshwater and marine animals including elasmobranches, fish, reptiles and invertebrates.

Responsibilities:
* Construct, erect, and install LSS components, lighting and display, and general aquarium equipment as needed
* Estimate time and materials required for assigned tasks and keep records of work
* Complete monthly preventive maintenance across the site combined with detailed record keeping of such works
* Conduct scheduled inspections of all filtration areas, including pumps, motors, chillers and other filtration equipment
* Perform repairs to pumps, motors and filtration equipment, repair as needed
* Serve as primary call out contact for the LSS monitoring system during the work week
* Animal diet preparation, feeding, observation and record keeping of over 5,000 animals
* Detailed record keeping of animal health treatments and feeding logs
* Water quality analysis of exhibits
* Interact with guests during public animal feeds
* Dive in exhibits for maintenance, cleaning and/or feeding dives
* Weekend, evening and holiday hours are required
* Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

About You
* Qualified candidates will possess at minimum a high school diploma/GED
* 2+ years’ experience in a public aquarium or zoo as an aquarist/zookeeper/intern
* Prior experience in mechanical repair and maintenance of aquarium life support systems (LSS)
* Able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of LSS, both open and closed systems
* Able to demonstrate ability to troubleshoot complex water treatment and filtration systems
* Previous experience in PVC plumbing and ability to read utility blueprints/drawings as they relate to filtration systems
* Able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of water treatment, chemicals and test methods
* Able to identify common fish diseases and parasites and proper course of treatment
* Proven ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and multi task as necessary to meet a deadline
* Great organization skills, detail oriented and self-starter
* Ability to work with people from all levels of discipline.
* Excellent solving problems and analytical skills to develop appropriate solutions
* Open to new learnings and quickly adapts to change
* Candidates must also be able to frequently lift up to 50 lbs.
* Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends to support site operations
* With site support the successful candidate will be required to attain level 1 AALSO certification within the first year, level 2 in the second year and level 3 in the third year

Required Education:
* Undergraduate degree in Life Sciences
* Other Requirements:
* Ability to obtain and hold a current First Aid and CPR certification.
* Ability to obtain and hold valid Driver’s License.
* Ability to work weekends and flexible hours.
* Must pass a pre-employment placement physical.
