The proposed £62m National Indoor Sports Arena (NISA) project for Glasgow’s East End has received £4m funding from the City Council, permitting completion of the final design.

The 5,000-seat national multi-sports venue will host national and international sports events. It will also offer an elite sports training centre as well as a sports facility for the local community.

The scheme will also include a 2,000-seat National Velodrome, which is anticipated to become a world centre for cycling, as well as an inline skating facility for the local community.

New headquarters for Scotland’s national sports council – sportscotland –will be located between the NISA and the National Velodrome.

Three smaller sports halls will also be available for events and community use.

Work on site is set to start in 2007, with an anticipated 2010 completion.

Cllr John Lynch, executive member for cultural and leisure services at Glasgow City Council, said: “These fantastic new facilities will improve our elite sports performance and attract even more world-class sporting events to Glasgow. The opportunity to improve the health and well-being of the local community through access to state of the art sports facilities underlines the importance of this development, irrespective of the Commonwealth Games bid.” Details: www.glasgow.gov.uk
