Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and Wigan Council have teamed up to develop a £75m sports project called the Leigh Sports Village in Wigan.

The sports facilities at the Village will comprise a 10,000-seat stadium and a 400-metre running track with a covered sprinting facility and sports pitches.

A £6.4m public sports centre within the village – to be managed by Wigan Leisure – will feature a six-lane, 25m (82ft) swimming pool, a sports hall with eight courts, a fitness suite and fitness class area.

Additional leisure facilities will include a cinema, a ten pin bowling alley, restaurants and a hotel.

The sports centre will be completed in May 2007.

MP for Leigh, Andy Burnham, said: “Leigh Sports Village is about creating opportunities for everyone. The new sports centre and swimming pool will greatly enhance the lives of many local people.”
