Arsenal football club has announced the biggest club sponsorship deal in the history of English football.

A £100m deal has been agreed between the club and Dubai-based Emirates Airline, which will see Arsenal’s new Ashburton Grove stadium being renamed the Emirates Stadium.

The £357m stadium, which is scheduled to open in time for the 2006-7 season, will carry the Emirates name for 15 years while the deal also includes shirt sponsorship for eight years, also starting from the 2006-7 season.

Keith Edelman, Arsenal’s managing director, said: “The sheer size and scale of this deal is an amazing opportunity for Arsenal.

“This long-term association is an excellent opportunity for both companies and will help Arsenal reach new markets and build on our existing supporter base around the world.”

The deal is seen as a part of Arsenal’s ambitions to expand its fan base – and the lucrative sales of merchandising – to Asia and Australasia.
