Art Fund rescues £1m knight in shining armour for British Museum
The National Art Collections Fund (The Art Fund) has given £178,808 to the British Museum to help purchase a Celtic La T'ne Gold Warrior fibula (brooch) dated 300-200 BC. The brooch, depicting a young warrior with his hunting dog, was bought at Christie's this week for £1,103,750; further funding came from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Although the identity of the jeweller is unknown, the fibula was once owned by the Portuguese Royal Family, suggesting that it came from a princely warrior tomb somewhere on the Iberian peninsula. David Barrie, Director of the National Art Collections Fund says the Art Fund reacted instantly to the British Museum's urgent request for a large sum to spearhead their fundraising campaign: This is a true masterpiece - an object of mesmerising beauty and exquisite workmanship, which vividly evokes the world of the Celtic warrior.
