Brighton Pier challenges rival pier lottery grant
Brighton's West Pier is facing a challenge over its £15m National Lottery Fund grant from the owners of a neighbouring pier. The West Pier, the country's only Grade I listed pier, has received lottery approval of the £15m grant for renovations to the Edwardian property, closed in 1975. Owners of the nearby Brighton Pier, formerly called the Palace Pier, believe that the grant represents unfair competition and is to challenge the award. A spokesperson for the Brighton Pier told The Telegraph: We believe it is wrong for a grant of £15m to be made for the West Pier when we have a Grade II listed building which has not received one penny of state aid. Lottery Fund officials are now reviewing the grant because the company that operates Brighton Racecourse has gone into partnership with the operators of West Pier, making it a commercial development.
