Cinema admissions climb in Africa and the Middle East
Admissions to cinemas in the six most developed cinema markets in Africa and the Middle East will climb by 40 per cent to reach 127 million by 2005, according to a new research report, Cinemagoing Africa Middle East, from film industry consultants, Dodona Research. Dodona says the six most developed markets hold almost all the multiplexes so far built in the region, with countries seeing their screen count rise by over 40 per cent since 1995, with Turkey growing fastest. The consultancy says admissions are also up by nearly 30 per cent with 'impressive' growth in Turkey, Lebanon and Egypt. Looking to the future, the report predicts fast growth in the underscreened markets of Egypt, Turkey and Lebanon, while suggesting that some stability and attendance growth could start to return to South Africa within two years. Dodona also estimate that a number of other markets are likely to achieve a higher profile than now over this timescale, notably the United Arab Emirates and some of the other states of the Gulf, and perhaps also Jordan and Iran. The report notes that 'small scale' opportunities exist in the capitals and major cities of many African countries to introduce modern cinemas: 'Unlike the cinema industries of the developed world, where mainstream markets at least, are becoming increasingly dominated by corporations, the markets of Africa and the Middle East still hold plenty of scope for the individual entrepreneur.' Cinemagoing Africa Middle East costs £325, obtainable for Dodona Research: www.dodona.co.uk
