Construction work on The Wave, a £37m indoor water park and leisure centre in Coventry, is in its final stages and the complex will be opened in phases over the next three months.

The centre's large health club and day spa will be among the first facilities to open, followed by the indoor waterpark.

All elements of the complex – designed by FaulknerBrowns architects and funded by both private and public investment – will be open "in time for summer".

The Wave's health club features a 120-station gym floor, a group exercise and dance studio and squash courts.

The club has been kitted out with Technogym equipment and is set to provide one of the most digitally-advanced fitness experiences in the region.

Innovative solutions include a new digital wristband, allowing customers to check in, secure a locker and record all of their exercise data on their smartphones to help them track their progress.

The complex has been built around an indoor waterpark featuring six flume rides and slides, making it among the largest of its kind in the UK.

Most of the water features and high octane rides will be placed at the upper level of the vertical building – an unusual feature for water park design.

There is also a 25m swimming pool and learning pool.

The Wave has been described as a "game changer" by Michael Hall, partner at FaullknerBrowns, who said the venue signals a change in the funding of aquatics facilities which had been “driven by lane swimming” over the past 20 years.

The Wave will be managed by CV Life, the operating name of Coventry Sports Foundation.

“Working with Technogym means The Wave isn’t just going to be a thrilling water park – it will be at the cutting edge of fitness and wellbeing," said Chris Panter, health and fitness manager at CV Life.

“The Wave's fitness technology connects with other personal fitness programmes and applications and provides seamless and quick access all the way from reception to changing rooms."
