David Lloyd Leisure (DLL) and Saga are today launching the roll out of their exclusive partnership, which offers Saga’s eight million customers bespoke DLL memberships.

To support the launch, Saga has conducted a study into the exercise habits of the over-50s, and revealed that one in five have a gym/health club membership.

Of the 2001 over-50s questioned, one in three reported that they exercise for more than four hours a week – 12 per cent more than the under 50s.

The study showed that older people are more comfortable with their bodies than younger people. More than twice as many 16- to 24-year-olds said they did they not visit a health club because they were intimidated by fellow gym users, than those aged 55 to 64.

Health clubs also appeal to the over 50s because of the possibility to socialise and meet new people. Saga reports that more than 75,000 of over 50s have found love at the gym, but says that 93 per cent of over-50s are primarily motivated to exercise to keep fit.

However, many of the 50plus group are put off health club memberships by financial considerations. A third said they do not like the idea of paying a joining fee, four in 10 said they did not want to commit to a 12 month membership and 44 per cent generally find it too expensive.

The Saga/DLL memberships offer a two week refundable trial membership (refundable in the fourth month of membership), no joining fee and a free health check, which includes tests on blood pressure, bone muscle strength and body mass index.

These memberships are currently available at DLL clubs in Bristol, Southampton, Solihull and Birmingham, with plans to be nationwide by the end of the year. Details: www.davidlloydleisure.co.uk
