A £4m exercise referral programme which uses the Register of Exercise Professionals’ (REPs) level 3 membership as its benchmark of quality has been launched by the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG).

The Exercise Referral Project was officially launched in October and will be introduced in stages over a period of three years beginning with six local authorities in the first year followed by two further additions of eight more local authorities.

Much of the project’s funding will be invested in training to ensure exercise professionals working on the schemes meet the standards set in the WAG Exercise Referral Guide (released in January 06).

The guide states that ‘Exercise professionals working with referred clients should be level 3 qualified, have an exercise referral qualification and … be registered … by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)’.

Other funding has been set aside to conduct a Wales-wide trial which will evaluate Exercise Referral Schemes and how they impact on exercise adherence and health.

The project is a further example of how the WAG is investing into increasing the physical activity in Wales.

‘Climbing Higher’ is its strategy for Sport & Physical Activity which has set ambitious targets. To contribute to these targets, the WAG has invested into the infrastructure of the Health & Fitness Industry with the development of Exercise Council Wales & funding the Welsh REPs Officer through the Sports Council for Wales Coaching Plan.
