Half a million for London's West End
Ken Livingstone, the mayor of London, has pledged £500,000 to fund 100,000 free and discounted tickets In a bid to revive London's declining theatre audiences.
The West End has experienced a fall in audience number since the September 11 terrorist attacks, and some shows, such as Nôtre Dame De Paris, have been forced to close.
The Mayor is supporting this cash injection with an offer of free bus travel, and is approaching restaurant owners to coordinate an additional incentive scheme. The drive comes as part of a pre-Christmas boost billed 'London's Open for Business'.
'The money is in direct response to calls from the theatres for a drive to win back audiences,' said Livingstone. 'We'll also be asking the Government to at least match the amount I have already pledged.'
