Hannibal breaks record
Cinema admissions in February reached 13.8 million, averaging 3.4 million cinema admissions a week - an increase of 9.5 per cent on January, according to the Cinema Advertising Association (CAA). However, admissions are 22 per cent down year on year; the CAA says this is due to the 'tremendous success' of Toy Story 2, which was released in February 2000 and was the highest grossing film of last year. As anticipated, Hannibal is a record breaker; in the opening week the film accounted for 5.2 million cinema admissions. This is the third largest week for admissions ever recorded in the history of the CAA. The opening weekend of Hannibal saw the largest box office earnings for an 18 certificate film ever with £6.4m, tripling the opening of Silence of the Lambs. The CAA says March is predicted to be 5 per cent up year on year, with the continued success of Hannibal, Oscar contender Chocolat and the return of Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality.
