Horniman Museum's new extension
The Horniman Museum in London will open its new extension this spring as part of a centenary redevelopment programme.
There will be a new Centenary gallery showcasing the world cultures collection, new education facilities as well as a shop and café overlooking the gardens that surround the museum.
Designed by architects Allies and Morrison as part of the Horniman 2001 Centenary development, the extension creates a new main entrance from the gardens and adds to the original building designed by Charles Harrison Townsend.
Opened in 1901 by collector and tea merchant Frederick Horniman, the museum houses his original collections covering natural history, human culture and musical instruments all gathered on his travels. At present the museum has collections including more than 7,000 musical instruments, a natural history collection including a stuffed walrus acquired in 1893, an aquarium and the African World's Gallery.
