Interbrew goes to court over Bass decision
Belgian brewing giant, Interbrew, yesterday embarked on its legal challenge against the government's decision to block its £2.3bn acquisition of Bass Brewers last year, in an attempt to retain the business. In a High Court judicial review, Interbrew put its case against the decision taken by Trade and Industry Secretary, Stephen Byers, and backed by the Competition Commission, describing it as 'grossly disproportionate'. Interbrew acquired the Bass business last August, but in December Byers ordered the company to resell it as the acquisition had created an 'effective duopoly' between Interbrew and Scottish and Newcastle. Government lawyers will make their case in the High Court today before the hearing closes on Friday. A decision is expected by the end of the month.
