JJB Sports, the retailer and operator of 31 health clubs, has issued a post-Christmas warning, forecasting that profits will come in below expectations at between £32m and £36m.

However, in an update on trading for the 22 weeks to 1 January 2006, the group reported that the level of revenue from its health club chain, JJB Fitness Club, was “entirely satisfactory”.

Total revenue for the period was 54 per cent higher than in the comparative period during the last financial year.

Over the last 12 months, JJB has opened 10 new health clubs and membership has grown from 83,000 to 121,000.
