Lollipops and children's songs to pacify clubbers at closing
Police in Leicester are encouraging nightclubs to hand out lollipops and play children's music in attempt to pacify drunken clubbers at closing time. The theme tunes from The Magic Roundabout, Mr Benn and Yellow Brick Road are being played at four nightclubs across the city as the venues close, and police have paid for 13,000 lollipops to be handed out as clubbers leave. By appealing to a feeling of wellbeing rather than playing aggressive songs or adrenalin-inducing dance anthems, the police hope that clubbers will shy away from disorderly behaviour that often hits the streets after venues close. The scheme is the brainchild of Inspector Daimon Tilley who got the idea after meeting an American professor of psychology on a course. A four-week trial is underway at Zanzibar's, Kudos, Branigans and Undecided in the Church Gate area, and will be broadened city and perhaps nationwide if the scheme proves successful.
