Madonna's highland fling boosts interest in Scotland
Today's much hyped wedding between Madonna and film director Guy Ritchie is creating waves among the Highland's tourism industry, despite local disinterest in the event.
The website of The Highlands of Scotland Tourist board has dedicated a sister site to the wedding as a result of the many queries it both anticpated and received. In the 12 days since the site's launch it has received a massive 15,000 hits, including visitors from every US state. The local economy, dominated by agriculture usually expects a healthy annual tourism revenue of £500m per year. Casia Zajac of the Highland of Scotland Tourist Board says that the media hype is expected to be a future boost for tourism: The wedding is definitely putting Dornoch on the map. Since the banns were posted, we've had thousands of website hits and enquiries, especially on highland weddings, which will have a knock-on effect for hoteliers and leisure operators in the region.
With the world's paparrazzi focussing their lenses on Dornoch and the nearby Skibo Castle, the event is expected to generate 'at least a 1 per cent' increase in tourism, giving the Highland economy a £5m injection.
