Major revamp of leisure facilities planned for North Wales
A North Wales leisure centre is set to be demolished and a new aquatic centre built as £15-18m regeneration plans for the Rhyl area get the go-ahead.
A Rhyl Going Forward report, has been approved by Denbighshire's cabinet, that proposed a significant upgrade of the existing leisure facilities looking at the future of Rhyl's Sun Centre, the Sky Tower, Pavilion theatre and children's village.
The report outlined the need to demolish the current leisure facility, the Sun Centre, which "has reached the end or its beneficial life and is "no longer suitable in the 21st century."
The existing Sun Centre will be removed from the current location adjoining the Pavilion theatre to allow way for a more suitable development such as a hotel.
Proposals for the new Aquatic and Fitness Centre, which will be located adjacent to the Sky Tower, includes plans for both leisure water facilities and more formal water attractions, together with health, fitness, catering and retail outlets.
The Pavilion will also undergo a revamp with the building of an entrance and new façade.
The report suggested that urgent work needs to be carried out on the 240ft Sky Tower to make the building more sustainable and reduce existing health and safety risks, with an estimated cost of £35,000.
The report also looks to demolish the 30-year-old swimming pool at Rhyl Leisure Centre.
Alliance Leisure has been appointed as the council's development partner, and they are currently assessing the feasibility of the proposals.
