Milk is now good for you, according to a new report published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. After many years of warnings about milk possibly increasing the risk of heart disease, researchers now claim it certainly does you no harm and may even reduce the risk of health problems, including heart disease. A report in the Daily Mail says researchers monitored more than 5,700 men aged between 35 and 64, for 25 years from the early 1970s in the west of Scotland. Data was collected by researchers from Bristol and Glasgow Universities on the men's health and lifestyle and their milk consumption. Of the 2,350 deaths recorded over 25 years, 892 were attributed to coronary artery disease, but death from heart disease was eight per cent lower among men who drank more than a third of a pint of milk every day compared with those who drank less than a third of a pint. Death from all causes, including cancer and stroke, was 10 per cent lower among men who drank more milk. It was suggested that milk drinkers might tend to lead healthier lives anyway and that calcium found in milk might counteract the adverse effects of the saturated fat content. The report also speculated that milk could contain ingredients that lower blood cholesterol levels.
