Plans to build an outdoor sports centre in Burnley has received a financial boost after securing a £700,000 National Lottery grant.

A planning application is being submitted by Burnley Council for the lakeside activity centre at Rowley Lake, which includes plans for a wakeboarding school and canoeing school that would offer coaching and equipment hire.

The proposal supports wider plans to create new sporting facilities within the Brun Valley Forest Park, which would be open in phases.

Councillor John Harbour, executive member for leisure and culture, said: "This is a significant step towards making our ambitious vision for Brun Valley Forest Park, and particularly the area around Rowley Lake, a reality.

"The aim is to provide a lasting sporting legacy, not only for local people but also to attract visitors from a wide area. The lakeside activity centre will help generate new opportunities in coaching and volunteering while, at the same time, providing healthy activities that will put Burnley on the outdoor sporting map."
