National Theatre overhaul to target younger audience
The National Theatre has announced plans for a major transformation to the South Bank site, aimed at bringing in younger audiences.
In 1991 11 per cent of theatre-goers to the National were under 24 but the figure has now dipped to 6 per cent through expensive ticket prices and less cutting-edge performances.
Director Trevor Nunn announced measures to combat ageing audiences including 'much cheaper ticket prices' and cheaper drinks at the bar. In addition, a £1.5m development will include splitting the 950-seat Lyttleton Theatre into two temporary smaller theatres which over the next six months will showcase work by younger writers.
Nunn says the changes will be broaden the audience demographic in what is the National's 25th year: I am working for a thriving, refreshed, broad-based new audience, including a body of young people under 30. A new generation of artistic and administrative talent is committed to taking the National forward.
