New partner sought for water sports venue
Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) has revealed that it is looking to run the National Water Sports Centre (NWSC) in partnership with a private sector firm by spring 2013.
Councillors are due to discuss the plans on 14 September, which - if approved - will see a partner brought into manage, operate and develop the Holme Pierrepont facility. NCC has undertaken a number of small-scale schemes at the NWSC since taking over the venue's management from Sport England in April 2009.
However, the cost of the facility to the local authority remains at £350,000 - a figure that is set to rise in 2013 when Sport England ends its £500,000 contribution. NCC also confirmed that developments such as a new visitor centre and an overhaul of the existing facilities will be required over the next 10 years.
John Cottee, the council's cabinet member for culture and community services, said: "We want to retain water based activities, offer good quality accommodation, improve the country park experience and continue to host high profile local, national and international events. "To achieve this, the centre will require significant investment. We do not want to burden the taxpayer, so a partner with expertise in this industry will be the best way to help us achieve our ambition."
