Newport pushes for velodrome
Outline planning permission has been granted for a possible sports complex on the west bank of the River Usk in Newport, Gwent, but campaigners are hoping a velodrome will be built, turning the town into a UK cycling centre.
Newport Council is currently conducting a feasibility study on the site and expects to make a final decision early in 2001. Local cycling clubs such as the Phoenix Cycling Club, hope Newport Council will 'act quickly' in order to host a velodrome on the site. The Lottery Sports Commission have set aside £7m for a velodrome to be built at a site within South Wales.
Borough councils across Wales and some commercial partners along the South Wales M4 corridor have been invited to submit proposals for building a world-class indoor cycling velodrome. The winning council will be responsible for the on-going running of the venue. Newport Velodrome Campaign have set up a website: www.NewportVelodrome.co.uk
