Permission for 180 acre Southend development
The developer of a 180-acre Southend-on-Sea site, has obtained a resolution to grant outline planning permission for what is effectively a new small town - including 53,800sq feet to be dedicated to leisure use. The site at Shoebury Garrison includes over 50 listed buildings, a scheduled ancient monument, an SSSI and a conservation area. Apart from the planned 465 residential homes and school, developer, Gladedale Homes, says the leisure development is likely to include indoor and outdoor sports, a health and fitness club, swimming pool, casino or cinema. A wheeled sports facility, trim trail, tennis courts, cricket pitch and pavilion and seafront cycleway are also planned. A new park will be designed around existing historical structures with a heritage trail and ecology trail. Gladedale are also proposing that an existing listed building known as the Officer's Mess (with 40 existing bedrooms), will become a hotel with long views of the Thames Estuary. The ex-Ministry of Defence site was sold to Gladedale Homes in March 2000.
