Premier Lodge calls for star-rated budget hotels
Budget hotel group, Premier Lodge, is calling for the UK star-rating system to broaden its remit to include the budget market. The calls arose following an independent survey by RSGB on behalf of Premier Lodge, which found that 38 per cent of people did not know what, if any, facilities were available at budget hotels and 83 per cent would welcome some clarification. The group conducted an independent survey through RSGB of 1,000 people to find out what they knew about facilities on offer in the budget hotel market. Of those who thought they did know, just 27 per cent though that rooms would offer ensuite bathrooms, 21 per cent thought that towels would be provided and 10 per cent thought the room would have a television. Premier Lodge's brand development director, Nick Read, says the lack of a rating system is restricting the sector's growth: It has been our belief for some time that there is no clear understanding by the British consumer of what they can expect from budget hotels and as a result, the sector's growth has been curtailed. Communication of the value offered by budget hotels has to be a priority. The tourism industry as a whole could benefit from more people realising that short breaks in the UK can be affordable and good value for money, he added.
