Pubmaster shows interest in Wolves estate
Tenanted pub chain, Pubmaster, is rumoured to be bidding for Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries, the 1,000-strong pub estate that put itself up for sale last October. The 2,000-strong Pubmaster chain owned by the Tchenguiz family and German bank WestLB, is believed to be interested in both W&D's estate and its brewing business. Chief executive, John Sands, said that the company was 'in a position' to secure a major deal following its restructuring three months ago and was ready to expand the business. Sands, however, could not confirm if a potential bid had been forged for W&D, but did comment that the potential sale would 'present us with a significant opportunity. Another significant opportunity could be acquiring all or part of the Whitbread estate still on the market. Meanwhile, venture capitalist Botts and Co is still expected to make an official offer for W&D, as is a management buyout team, by the 5 April deadline set last week.
