Esporta’s continued focus on its racquets business is paying off as the company has reported an increase in membership of 14,000 in its half year results.

The Duke Street-owned company said the growth was due to an 18 per cent increase in new joiners at its racquets clubs compared to last year, as well as drop in attrition rates of 6 per cent.

Chief executive, Neil Gillis, attributed the success to company’s commitment to standards and service.

“A lot of new joiners have been referred by existing members who like the improvements,” he said. “Another key factor is that we have empowered our general managers, which has unleashed a lot of enthusiasm and ability.”

Going forward, Gillis plans to further empower general managers, heads of departments and other staff, as well as to grow the UK business.

The company is also likely to sell its nine European sites – in Spain, Germany and Sweden – to focus on acquisitions and new developments in the UK.

Meanwhile, Gillis himself will take up his appointment as the chair of Duchy Originals this month.

Duchy Originals was established by The Prince of Wales in 1992 to promote sustainable farming and food production through the manufacture of a range of organic and natural foods.
