Redevelopment begins at Hackney Empire
Work is about to start on the £15m refurbishment of the Hackney Empire in London following a successful fundraising campaign. The 100-year old theatre was given a lifeline earlier this year following a £1.3m donation from local-born businessman, Sir Alan Sugar. The donation completed the three-year campaign led by comedian Griff Rhys Jones to refurbish the Empire, which narrowly escaped demolition in the 1980s. Sunley Turriff is refurbishing the Grade II listed property in three phases; the refurbishment of the Frank Matcham auditorium, foyer and bars; rebuilding the stage and dressing rooms; and rebuilding the existing Pepys pub to incorporate it into the main theatre as a music and hospitality venue. In addition to Sugar's donation, Rhy Jones himself pledged £250,000 to the project, the Arts Council gave £5m, and the Heritage Lottery Fund £3.85m. The redevelopment is scheduled to complete by August 2002.
