Sheffield will be hosting one of the International Skating Union’s major ice skating championships next January.

The European Short Track Speed Skating Championship – which will feature more than 130 competitors from 24 countries – will be held at iceSheffield and was secured by the council’s Major Sports Events Unit, in partnership with Sheffield International Venues and the National Ice Skating Association.

Robert MacDonald, cabinet member for economic regeneration, culture and planning at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are delighted to attract another high profile sporting event to the city. The championship is one of the highlights of the skating calendar.

The announcement follows the news that Sheffield will also be hosting international athletics in the form of British Grand Prix next July. Details: www.sheffield.gov.uk
