Sheffield's Motorpoint Arena set for major revamp
Plans for a multi-million pound refurbishment of Sheffield's Motorpoint Arena have been unveiled.
Work has already began on the first stage of the project, which will see the installation of a new roof for the first time since the venue opened in 1991.
The second phase is expected to begin later this year and will include the removal of the arena’s 12,500 seats, which will be replaced with more modern seating.
Home of ice-hockey team Sheffield Steelers, the revamp will feature a new scratch resistant plexiglass that will be fitted around the ice to improve viewing.
There will also be new energy efficient lighting and the replacement of all the external concourse doors.
Sheffield International Venues expects the cost of the investment to be exceeded by the income from additional business opportunities.
Steve Brailey, chief executive of Sheffield International Venues, said: "This investment marks an important business decision to invest in a high value asset that brings world-class acts and events to Yorkshire and the Sheffield city region.
"It will allow us to further highlight the Arena as one of the premier entertainment and leisure venues in the UK, capable of attracting and hosting a wide and diverse range of events, including concerts, sporting events, exhibitions and conferences."
Further investment plans for the Motorpoint Arena are also planned and will be announced later in the year.
