Bill Sweetenham, the national performance director for British Swimming, has criticised the UK government for not investing enough money in sports facilities.

Speaking on the radio station, BBC Five Live, the Australian claimed that public funding amounted to ‘tiddlywinks’ and that the UK lagged behind to most other top sporting countries. He said: “Britain has not invested in sport and it’s foolish to say they have. In swimming, we have the worst facilities in the top twenty countries in the world.

“To be demanding results when you haven’t invested in facilities is nonsensical.”

The comments were made just days after Sweetenham signed a new four-year extension to his contract with the swimming association.

Sweetenham joined British Swimming in November 2000 with the task of leading the GB swimming team to the Athens Olympics.
