Wine profits or wine profiteering?
Top restaurants have been labelled rip-off merchants for the mark-up on their wines, in a report in Catering & Hotel-keeper magazine.
The report, Profits or Profeteering, accuses some of Britain's most prestigious restaurants of imposing what it calls ' monster margins'. Restaurateurs who were once content to charge twice what they paid for wine are now said to be marking up bottles to three or even four times the original price.
One example exposed in the report was a £3.67 bottle of country merlot which was listed in one restaurant at £27.
However, the author of the report, wine consultant Douglas Wregg, says the British public's growing knowledge about wine is leading to a greater awareness of the 'ridiculous prices' being charged. The survey contrasts the 'dinosaur' venues with businesses that 'foster goodwill by providing good quality wine at consistent value for money'.
