The new-look Oriel Gallery has become the first building to be completed as part of a multi-million pound restoration project at Antrim Castle Gardens, Northern Ireland.

Opened on 6 December with the unveiling of the Robot Exhibition, the gallery was expanded as part of the £5.8m development at Clotworthy House, which dates back to the 17th century.

Antrim Borough Council; the Heritage Lottery Fund; and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency contributed towards the project, along with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland (ACNI).

ACNI has provided nearly £237,000 to help restore the Castle Gardens, which also included a new workshop space; a music resource centre; and a pavilion space.

Antrim mayor Paul Michael said: "The opening of the Oriel Gallery is a real first. It marks the completion of the first building in the first phase of the restoration project in the Gardens.

"This historic site, where the first trees were planted over 400 years ago, will be a truly unique and valuable asset to the people of the Borough and our visitors for generations to come."
