London mayor Boris Johnson has called on some of the city's leading businesses to "plan, prepare and profit" from this summer's Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Fortnum and Mason managing director Beverley Aspinall hosted a business breakfast on 9 January, with the mayor meeting with figures from major hotels among other companies.

Johnson said: "The success of the 2012 Games in London depends on the ability of our businesses to maximise the opportunities from what promises to be a summer like no other."

Meanwhile, a new study from BT has found that a fifth of companies across the transport and travel sector could miss out on opportunities presented by the Games due to inadequate planning.

More than half of organisations in the sector are anticipating increased demand during the event, and the majority (89 per cent) have raised concerns about knock-on effects such as staff attendance.

BT Global Services UK president Emer Timmons said: "London 2012 presents both challenges and opportunities for transport and travel organisations. But success or failure depends on how ready they are.

"There's still time to get plans in place, but with less than seven months to go, we do urge all organisations to begin preparations now or miss out on the economic benefits."
