London's Heathrow Airport has announced plans to open a dedicated terminal in order to accommodate athletes departing from this summer's Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The "Games Terminal" will be the departure point for more than 10,000 athletes and will help the airport manage an expected increase in baggage and passengers after the event.

Nick Cole, head of Olympic and Paralympic planning at the airport, said the Games would provide a "unique operational task and a massive challenge" to Heathrow.

"Every part of the airport is working together to ensure we can give the athletes a warm welcome and ensure all passengers enjoy the atmosphere," he said.
