£22m riverside leisure centre set for 2017 launch
Work is underway on a new £22m four-storey leisure centre in Clydebank, which will become a focal point for the regeneration of the Scottish town’s historic Queen's Quay.
The centre, which will enjoy views over the River Clyde, is the first in a series of developments planned to revitalise Queen's Quay, which was once the bustling heart of Clydebank's shipbuilding industry. The venue will mark a significant upgrade on the leisure facilities offered at Clydebank’s Play Drome, which will be sold once the new site is fully operational.
Expected to open in early 2017, the leisure centre will include a 25m (82ft) swimming pool, teaching pool, leisure pool with waves and flume, a multi-purpose sports hall, plus a fitness suite and dance studio. Details of the gym are still being finalised and an equipment supplier has yet to be selected.
The centre, which is being built next to West College Scotland and the Council's Aurora House offices, will be operated on behalf of West Dunbartonshire Council by WD Leisure. The project is being delivered by hub West Scotland – the Council’s development partner – while the main contractor is BAM, working to plans from architects Kennedy Fitzgerald.
"Clydebank has a proud sporting history and this centre is going to hone the next generation of sporting talent,” said West Dunbartonshire Council leader Martin Rooney.
“It marks the start of a new chapter for Queen's Quay and I think we are all excited to welcome the first of our residents to the new centre in 2017.”
