CHAPS Free Men's Health Checks Supported by Impulse Leisure

05 May 2022

Impulse Leisure was the proud sponsor of an event supporting men’s health and wellbeing at The Civic Hall, located next to their Blackshots leisure centre in Grays, Essex. On the 22nd of February, local men were invited to receive a free men’s health check, which included diabetes checks, skin cancer screenings, heart disease screenings and more.

The event itself was incredibly successful and broke the record of the most attended CHAPS event and money raised in a single day – ever.

Impulse Leisure (operated by Thurrock Community Leisure, a registered charity and leisure trust with the aim of creating active and healthy communities) was very happy to support CHAPS, which is also a registered charity with this event. The aim, through a series of screenings, was to prevent long term illness through early diagnosis and to also refer local men to further support services.

CHAPS was founded in 2000 and supports all men’s health. CHAPS specialise in prostate diseases and cancer whilst raising awareness of men’s health issues such as mental health. They also run health screenings and a campaign for national prostate cancer screening services.

Overall, the free men’s health day at The Civic Hall generated over £1350 through donation buckets and online donations which will be used towards funding their next event. However, the biggest accomplishment of the day was that over 250 local men completed free health screenings, which led to over 20% of these men being referred for further investigation or treatment.

"We are incredibly proud to have supported CHAPS in hosting this important event. It was fantastic to see so many local men take advantage of this opportunity, demonstrating that the people of Thurrock take their health and wellbeing very seriously," said Karl Hayes, Manging Director of Impulse Leisure.

"Physical activity plays a major part in reducing your risk of major illnesses, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and cancer and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%. It is important to do at least the recommended minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week as prevention, before cure. So, start your active today.”

In the UK, 70,000 men die prematurely. There are no NHS screening programmes for prostate cancer, the most common cancer in men in the country. However, CHAPS' events, initiatives and sheer determination aim to change that. Regular checks help cut the deaths from prostate cancer by 50%, so awareness and early detection are vital.

Men aged 40-75 had the opportunity to book an appointment with clinics in the Thurrock area for a prostate cancer screening, sports and physio screening and heart disease check. Walk-in appointments were also available for quick and easy skin cancer and aortic aneurysm screenings on a first-come-first-served basis.

The events are sponsored and supported by Impulse Leisure, McDonald's, Mayflower, West and Co, as well as other health clinics, solicitors, and funeral services, who have all chipped in to support CHAPS in the past.
