Pendle Leisure Trust Steps in to Provide Skill and Physical courses for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award
08 Nov 2023
Pendle Leisure Trust is pleased to announce they are creating courses specifically for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards for local secondary school children.
After identifying a lack of availability of courses for DofE Bronze achievers, Pendle Leisure Trust has created three courses across its three main leisure sites. These courses will fulfil the Skill and Physical requirements of a DofE Bronze Award Scheme that participants need as part of the course.
Jonathan, Marketing Manager at Pendle Leisure Trust said: “After talking to the DofE Manager at Fisher More High School, it became apparent that Pendle District had very few DofE-orientated classes for the local teenagers to attend. As Pendle Leisure is at the forefront of activities within the district, we knew we had to do something to rectify the situation by utilising the three local centres, Pendle Wavelengths, Nelson, Pendle Leisure Centre, Colne, and West Craven Sports Centre, Barnoldswick. Each centre will now provide a course that not only allows the DofE participants to achieve their required 12-week, one-hour activity but also gives these young people the opportunity to partake in leisure activities that can provide a healthy lifestyle for the future.”
Jody, Fisher More DofE Manager said: “As a secondary school, we’re dedicated to giving our pupils the best start in life and offering enrolment on the DofE offers a great opportunity. However, it quickly became apparent that the number of Skill or Physical courses available within Pendle was quite limited, which is why I contacted Jonathan at Pendle Leisure Trust to see what they could do. I’m impressed at how quickly they have created these three courses and look forward to what else they will be able to offer in the future."
The three courses, Junior Taekwondo, Gym/Fitness Instructor and Fitness Sessions have been specifically created to be suitable for the Skill and Physical element of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and will commence in late November for a prepaid 12-week period.
Alison, Chief Executive of Pendle Leisure Trust said: “Having been made aware of the popularity of the DofE within the local secondary schools and the distinct lack of suitable courses across Pendle for those trying to achieve their Bronze status, Pendle Leisure Trust has created three initial courses which will be launched in the next few days. If they are as successful as we believe they will be, we’ll be adding further courses at the three leisure centres along with, Seedhill Athletics & Fitness Centre, the Good Life Project allotments in Nelson and the recently renovated, The Muni Theatre in Colne. Being able to these extra three venues will open up the availability of a Volunteering Course, the third of the three requirements in gaining the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.”
