Momentwm Celebrates Successful Launch Event: A Brighter, Greener Future for Newport
08 Nov 2023
Newport Live is hailing the resounding success of its Momentwm launch event which marks the beginning of a groundbreaking initiative set to transform transportation in Newport towards a happier and healthier city. Momentwm is a visionary project delivered in partnership with Newport City Council, The Burns Delivery Unit and Transport for Wales. It aims to show how a more active lifestyle where walking, wheeling or cycling more often can have many personal benefits as well as helping to improve people’s local communities. All these benefits will combine to help transform Newport into a cleaner, greener, and more people focused city, that is accessible and enjoyable for all.
During the launch event the Momentwm Team presented an Adult Bike Skills session, with attendees from the GAP, a charitable organisation dedicated to supporting refugees and the homeless which underlined the transformative power of cycling as a tool for empowerment and self-reliance. Sessions provide a distinct opportunity for participants, many of whom have no prior biking experience, to acquire essential cycling skills. To date, more than 30 individuals have participated in these sessions, enabling them to gain newfound independence for navigating the city.
Gethin, Active Travel Programme Manager, says, "Momentwm represents a significant step forward in our efforts to transform Newport into a city where sustainable transportation choices are not only encouraged but celebrated. Take our Adult Bike Skills session which is just one of the exciting offerings we have for the residents of Newport to get involved with. It's designed for individuals of all abilities, from those who have never ridden a bike to those looking to enhance their cycling skills. Newport Live’s Momentwm project is a testament to our commitment to a cleaner, greener, and healthier Newport. We invite everyone to join us on this exciting journey as we work together to create a vibrant and accessible city for all."
The Momentwm project comprises several programs and initiatives, including:
Adult Bike Skills: Offering inclusive sessions for individuals of all skill levels, from beginners to those looking to enhance their cycling abilities.
Fix Your Bike: Teaching essential bike maintenance skills to keep bikes in peak condition.
Walking Network: Promoting the exploration of Newport's distinctive charm and attractions by foot, while also advocating for user-friendly, social routes that make commuting on foot around the city a viable option.
Employer Engagement: Collaborating with local businesses to encourage employees to choose sustainable modes of commuting.
Andrea, Director of Business Development, says, "The collaboration between Newport Live, Newport City Council, The Burns Delivery Unity and Transport for Wales on Momentwm is a shining example of what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared vision for positive change. We are proud to be part of this partnership, working hand in hand to create a happier, healthier, and more sustainable Newport with a positive impact on active travel for all. Momentwm is not just a project; it's a testament to our commitment to fostering a vibrant and active community through positive collaboration."
Momentwm is not just a project; it's a movement toward a brighter and greener future for Newport. Join us in this transformative initiative that will lead the way towards a healthier and more sustainable Newport.
