Get Out Get Active project success
05 Dec 2019
Your Leisure Kent, over the last 3 years, have been enormously proud to be part of the national project "Get Out Get Active," which was funded by the Spirit of 2012 and led by Activity Alliance.
It is an amazing example of how a well-crafted project, led by a forward thinking organisation and funder, can not only have a significant impact on the hardest to reach communities to help them get more active, but in Your Leisure's case, it can also help dramatically change an organisations approach to the services it provides and how it engages with everyone in their community.
Ian Barker, Your Leisure's Community and Funding Manager said: "The support from Activity alliance and Spirit of 2012 has been outstanding and not only in the form of funding, but even more importantly in the form of inspirational leadership, guidance and encouragement to try different ways of working and learning and sharing from that, our organisation's DNA has and continues to be changed by their influence and support."
The two images are examples of many successful activities that the projects support financially, and advisory has helped. This has been in the form of the funding enabling equipment to be purchased, e.g. New Age Kurling sets and replacement parts for fully accessible bikes. But also, guidance around how to mentor/support volunteers to lead on an activity.
Both activities (like many others) are going from strength to strength because of this initial investment in funding and guidance.
As we come to the end of the project, long term sustainability has been achieved in many ways. Barry Horne, Chief Executive at Activity Alliance recently reached out to Your Leisure's Managing Director, Kevin Fordham and said: "I wanted to thank you for the positive contribution that the Thanet locality has made to the GOGA project. It seems such a long time since we met to discuss and then kickstart the Thanet GOGA programme.
"I have to say that the complete company buy in to the values and aims of the project stands out within the UK project and is something that Your Leisure should be very proud of! We have seen some great work across the GOGA areas, but your case study will be used as an example of best practice to other Leisure Trusts and providers. The positive contribution that you have made is dis-proportionate to the amount of funding given in comparison to other localities but shows what can be achieved with teamwork, commitment and creative thinking."
The national Get Out Get Active project has been so well received and delivered on its objectives, that Activity Alliance have secured further funding to carry on the great work beyond 2020. New funding will broaden Get Out Get Active impact.
