Reg Curtis joins Halo Leisure as chair of Trustees
05 Feb 2020
Halo Leisure have appointed Reg Curtis as their new Chair of the Board of Trustees and his experience is proving an asset in the group's mission to be the best in the business, to square up to competition from cut price commercial operators, and to expand in the regions where they're based.
"The biggest threat to any organisation is competition," says Curtis, who was chief executive of the Ministry of Defence's Retail and Catering sector before he retired.
"Halo's CEO Scott Rolfe knows we can match what our competition does and some, chiefly by staying ahead of the curve rather than catching up after the fashion. The fitness industry is waking up to people's interest in new, fashionable ways to be active and we want to stay in tune with that, be it via a new event, new activity or new piece of equipment."
Having invested millions in their facilities, Halo know the numbers are now key.
"We've cut the price of membership and we've seen numbers increase, but that has a ripple effect, creating a buzz in our centres, and a more dynamic environment for staff, and more money for the work we do," says Curtis. "We want to better utilise the space we have to make room for even more activities, invest in technology so we can keep the pace of change going and expand in the regions where we work. It's like a bow wave of success."
Their customers should make no mistake, though, that the mission of this social enterprise to promote access and to break down barriers for those who find exercise difficult is served by this commercial drive, not secondary to it. There is no question, says Curtis, of Halo losing that community identity.
"We are more accessible than our competitors as a result of the membership deals we're able to offer to teenagers, older members and members on local incomes. Meanwhile the work we do with GPs is offering free access to those people they refer for health reasons. So when people come into our centres, they not only find a dynamic, buzzy atmosphere, they find a welcoming, safe place to exercise, with experts on hand to help them. They find toning suites which are having a transformative effect on people with mobility issues; they find dementia friendly swimming, and a team of staff trained to understand and meet their individual needs. They love it that there is zero judgement, 100 percent support, and new activities they never thought they could try. They value the fact that, as a social enterprise, we can invest all profits back into this work.
"As someone who loves sport (I am a bowls player), and the competition and camaraderie it brings, it is a complete privilege being able to apply my experience as a business leader to helping the Halo team fulfil their ambition of being best in class. Leisure centres used to be a cost burden to local councils, but I think those councils are beginning to really appreciate the savings centres like Halo's bring to the public purse, and that they are an asset, and can be an income generator," adds Curtis. "We are hugely excited to be working with councils, with all our partners, and about what we can achieve in 2020."
