Game is not over
05 Feb 2020
Edinburgh Leisure's CEO June Peebles has responded to an Edinburgh Evening News article which talked about budget cuts and possible venue closures.
"You may have read in today's Edinburgh Evening News the front-page story and pages 8-9 (and online) with a headline, 'Game Over - Future of sports centres in doubt as city considers funding cuts'." she said.
"The media reports that a number of sports facilities are operating at a loss or with significant deficits and suggests that they could be in danger of closure, community buy-out or possible asset transfer – EICA, Ainslie Park Leisure Centre, Tumbles, Gracemount Sports Centre, Jack Kane Sports Centre and various golf courses are mentioned. It also talks about possible price increases of 4% and a review of opening hours.
"There's no doubt that like many organisations, we are facing budget challenges. However, any discussion at this point about venue closures is pure speculation and scaremongering. The budget challenges and prospect of reduced funding from the City of Edinburgh Council mean that Edinburgh Leisure has to continuously review what we do and how we do it to avoid closures and service reductions. Price increases will be one way to help address the budget challenges but, I do not want price increases to have a negative impact on usage and participation levels – we are all about supporting people to be active.
"Edinburgh City Council does face significant funding challenges, they also have aspirations around well-being and poverty. There is an obvious fit here with Edinburgh Leisure's charitable purpose and I'm committed to working with the Council to help support an active and healthy city for all.
"So for now, please don't read too much into what you read in the papers or online. You will of course be advised of price changes and any changes to services as a result of the budget challenges.
"In the meantime please keep moving with us and perhaps you might even want to contact your local Councillor to voice your support of the role Edinburgh Leisure venues and activity programmes play in enabling people and communities throughout Edinburgh to be active."
