GLL partners with Manchester City Football Club and Manchester Council to provide Rest & Relaxation
01 Jun 2020
An innovative collaboration between leisure operator and social enterprise GLL, Manchester City Council, Manchester Health & Care Commissioning and Manchester City Football Club has seen the city's National Squash Centre (NSC) transformed into a Rest & Relaxation facility for hard working NHS staff.
The NSC has been repurposed to include a 'pop up' gym with a range of resistance and cardio equipment and a virtual fitness studio, created from former squash courts, with classes including Yoga and Pilates delivered via a giant screen. Also on offer is a quiet space, situated within what was a library and now equipped with comfortable sofas, enabling visitors to enjoy some restful downtime. While staff offices have been converted into an onsite Internet café, providing private areas, PCs and free Wi-Fi for workers wanting to connect with friends and family.
A selection of hot and cold meals are served daily by F3 who are contract caterers at the neighbouring Etihad Stadium. A different menu each week catering for all dietary requirements and each meal is served in a single use, recyclable container with individually wrapped cutlery. The Stadium's car park is being used as a 'click and collect' point for Morrison's grocery deliveries – meaning NHS staff can avoid supermarket queues or unnecessary journeys.
Social distancing is adhered across the facility with protective screens and floor markings throughout. Cleaning stations, made from transformed ticket booths on loan from Manchester City Football Club, conveniently situated at 5 metre intervals within the gym and fitness studio areas and users are asked to wipe down equipment before and after use. GLL staff clean 'touch points' and communal spaces throughout the day and every evening a deep clean is carried out by contract cleaners from OCS Group who would normally work at the Etihad Stadium.
Following a pilot phase, the Rest & Relaxation facility is now available to 26,000 NHS staff and support service workers from across Manchester. It is open from 7.30am – to 10pm daily. The NSC is just a couple of tram stops from Manchester's Nightingale Hospital and NHS staff are able to park for free at the NSC, before making their way to work in an area of the city with very few parking facilities.
Commenting on the initiative Ryan Walker, GLL's Partnership Manager for Manchester said: "This has been a significant project to pull together, involving numerous different parties. But we are all very proud of what we have achieved in a short space of time and that we are able to offer some genuine support and respite to Manchester's fabulous NHS and support workers.
"The feedback we have had to date has been hugely positive, with many hospital staff visiting after they have finished their shifts. It's been particularly useful for NHS workers who are living in temporary accommodation, perhaps in a hotel room, who really appreciate the additional space and facilities we are able to offer. In the first week of the pilot we had 50 visits, while last week we saw in excess of 500, with numbers continuing to grow."
