Better leisure centres donate 115,000 pieces of PPE to St Thomas's Hospital
01 Jun 2020
Better Leisure Centres in London and the South East are among those to have donated over 115,000 items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to St Thomas's Hospital.
The overshoes and gloves valued at nearly £4,000 will be used by hospital staff at the Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The PPE is normally used by Better's staff on cleaning and maintenance duties and while administering first aid at the 270 facilities they operate nationally including 120 sites in London and Surrey.
In addition to Wembley Leisure Centre, the boroughs providing the PPE are Lambeth, Camden, Reigate and Banstead, Merton, Ealing, Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham.
Brixton Recreation Centre co-ordinated the gathering of the PPE which was then couriered to St Thomas's Hospital this week.
Better Leisure Centres are run by the UK's leading not-for-profit leisure social enterprise GLL. With all Better Leisure Centres, gyms and pools closed since 20 March by Government order, the provider wanted to do its bit for civil resilience.
Commenting on the donation of PPE, Lambeth Partnership Manager at Better; Jeremy Lake said:
"As a social enterprise we exist to support the physical, mental and social health of local communities across the UK and our primary concern is to help them through the current crisis which has hit the capital hardest.
"With our facilities now closed, we don't need the PPE now - but the NHS does. By donating our stocks to St Thomas's Hospital – one of London's busiest serving communities in South London – we can help protect more Critical Care staff who are doing the most important job of saving lives every day."
"We are immensely grateful to all our local authority partners and especially Lambeth Council who we are working closely with at Brixton Recreation Centre's new food distribution hub.
"Along with the support of our staff volunteers and charity partners, together we are really making a difference in supporting local communities."
David Lawson, chief procurement officer at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We are very grateful to Better for their very generous donation. We have a good supply of PPE but this will help ensure that we continue to have a sustainable amount to keep our staff and patients safe."
