Doncaster Leisure Trust turned community support provider

Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) turned from a leisure provider into a community support provider in response to the global Covid-19 pandemic.
Working closely with the local authority, Doncaster Council, the leisure trust set up and delivered a Community Hub as an emergency response to ensure the most vulnerable people across the borough were supported during the early stage of the UK lockdown.
Doncaster Community Hub, a partnership between Doncaster council, Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT), St Leger Homes, Age UK and other voluntary, community and faith organisations across the Borough has operated from a number of DCLT managed venues including Doncaster Dome.
The Hub, delivered humanitarian support via its seven days a week, 12 hours a day helpline, food distribution and pro active support for the shielded population.
Michael Hart, chief executive of DCLT said: "We were extremely proud of our team and how quickly they responded to the changing circumstances.
"Working closely with Doncaster Council we were able to launch the Community Hub as a resource to help people in our communities.
"What this meant was that people who had previously been leisure attendants, gym instructors or catering managers were out delivering emergency food parcels and receptionists and presentation staff were answering calls to help to sign post people to much needed support.
"So far the Community Hub has answered more than 13,000 calls, made more than 5,000 calls to vulnerable members of the community, delivered more than 2,500 food parcels and collected more than 2,600 prescriptions to help those in need.
"The Coronavirus ( COVID-19) pandemic changed the way we have been able to go about our day to day lives and the Community Hub has been a real lifeline to people who have been learning to live with the uncertainty of the situation."
Doncaster Community Hub has and continues to provide various levels of help and support for people who might not have access to support from other avenues. Phone, email and online support is being provided as well as on the ground teams who deliver food, pick up prescriptions and help with a variety of other tasks.
"As we started 2020, we had no idea that we'd be called upon to set up an emergency call centre, food and prescription delivery service, no one knew what was around the corner. What has been great to see in Doncaster is the resilience and flexibility of teams and the partnership working that has made this response possible.
"Our teams worked hard to set this provision up and deliver the different elements of the Community Hub over the first six weeks of response.
Other teams from across the council and partner organisations have been drafted in to help to continue to provide this service as we start to look at our plans for how we can safely reopen our venues.
"Crookhill Park Golf Course reopened on May 13 and this has given us an insight into some of the measures we'll need to introduce at our leisure facilities. Customers have responded well and are all taking the physical distancing measures seriously to protect themselves and our staff.
"We are looking forward to becoming leisure, culture and hospitality providers once more, when it is safe to do so and will be looking at innovative ways to use our space so the flexibility of the team will be called on again," said Michael.
