Mobile Covid-19 testing unit and food distribution hub set up at Oxstalls Sports Park
01 Jun 2020
Aspire Sports and Cultural Trust has always had the needs of the community at its heart.
During these unprecedented times, everyone is having to change how they usually operate, behave, and function.
To support the changing needs of the Gloucester community, Oxstalls Sports Park has reopened its doors as a mobile testing unit, welcoming soldiers from 1 Bn The Royal Welsh to provide a drive through service to local people who are displaying coronavirus symptoms.
Everyone aged five and over who is showing coronavirus symptoms is now eligible for a swab test to find out if they have the virus.
This testing centre is extremely important for tackling Covid-19 in the county, as it establishes if those people with symptoms have the virus and need medical care, if people can return to work, or if further advice and support is needed.
Furthermore, Oxstalls Sports Park also operated as a food distribution hub, supporting those in Gloucester who were less able to access food staples during the crisis.
As a registered charity which constantly strives to improve the physical and mental health and wellbeing of its local community, Aspire's decision to use its currently closed Oxstalls centre to support the NHS and Gloucester residents further shows its commitment to bringing the community together.
Jacquie Douglas, Chief Executive of Aspire, said: "During these difficult times, like many Charitable Leisure Trust organisations, we have been delighted to be able to assist with the National effort in supporting our communities during the Covid-19 crisis – we see it as an extension of our core work and have been able to showcase our facility and service management expertise to proactively engage with the relevant agencies to assist those in need.
Whilst the terrible loss of life, disruption to our families and difficulties faced by many of our colleagues has been shocking and upsetting, I continue to be heartened by the resilience, patience and perseverance of staff and those in the community to work together to ensure we come through this crisis with strength and hope for the future.
There continue to be many challenges as we move through each phase of mobilisation planning, reopening and recovery – these are also times of new opportunities that have and will continue to emerge that we must grasp and maximise.
Moreover, the 'team' effort of our sector and drawing together of skills, experiences and insights has been profound – I have never been more proud to be part of our sector and all that is CLUK."
