Charity Glasgow Life delivers online services and supports staff to volunteer during lockdown
06 Jul 2020
Glasgow’s love for culture, sport and learning is leading to a surge in take up of Glasgow Life’s online services during lockdown. The charity which delivers pioneering programmes to benefit the lives of the people of Glasgow is delighted with the popularity of its digital offering.
Councillor David McDonald, Chair of Glasgow Life and Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council said: “These have been a difficult few months. The teams at Glasgow Life have worked tirelessly to enable people to be able to access online versions of the wonderful services the city is normally able to enjoy.
“The free Glasgow Club app has been a huge success. It has been downloaded over 5,000 times by citizens in their own homes. They have been able to join over 150 virtual live classes delivered by Glasgow Club instructors, with people clocking up an impressive 200,000 home workouts since lockdown started.
“Over 4,000 new members have registered with Glasgow Libraries with nearly 20,000 library ebook issues in the past two months, over 50 per cent ahead of usual.
“Audiobook use continues to be strong with almost 5,000 being accessed in the past month and over 20,000 emagazines have been downloaded since lockdown began.
“Glasgow Museums also has 1.6 million objects in the collection they are sharing online. They have recently launched ‘Ask the Archivist’ via Facebook, which is proving extremely popular alongside a regular ‘Ask the Archivist’ column in the Glasgow Times.
“We have all been missing being able to appreciate art, music and museums, being able to easily access learning and take part in sport. While we wait to be able to enjoy these shared experiences once again, #glasgowlifegoeson is the next best thing.”
Accessing the services: as well as 24 hour-a-day access to services online, there is curated content on Glasgow Life social media channels which can be found by searching for the #glasgowlifegoeson hashtag.
Glasgow Life has also been supporting staff to volunteer and make a valuable difference to those in need.
One example is Diane Cunningham, Senior Development Officer for Physical Activity, who has been volunteering five lunchtimes per week with Shettleston Juniors football club. She said: “My son Daniel plays with the team and I am a volunteer coach.
“The owner of the social club was worried about the pensioners that attended the lunch club when the building had to close under lockdown. We came together to discuss what we could do to help and agreed that coaches would volunteer and deliver cooked food to the pensioners in their homes if we could afford to keep the chef on to cook the meals.
“We deliver five days per week to over 100 pensioners ensuring they have a meal every day with over 10,000 meals provided to date. We have also delivered food supplies to local care homes and hospitals and even used club funds to purchase PPE for local nurses who were working without.
“The amazing thing about volunteering is we’ve rallied round the community. We’ve even sourced a parasol and base for one of our pensioners who is shielding and lives alone with no family nearby. He mentioned he'd love to sit outside and watch the world go by and hopefully chat to passing neighbours to beat the loneliness but was unable to as he didn’t have any shade. We managed to get him one second hand which he’s delighted about.
“Volunteering is a hugely rewarding opportunity and has brought together our community in a fantastic way. I’d recommend getting involved to anyone.”
Aside from sporting roles, team members are also working in other areas to support communities. Joyce MacDonald, Assistant Manager, Glasgow Club Bellahouston has been volunteering with British Red Cross through the Glasgow Life Employer Supported Volunteering programme. She told us: “Our facility is closed, so I applied for one of the Employer Supported Volunteering roles with British Red Cross.
“I’ve been volunteering as a call handler, processing incoming referrals for people in need of food pack deliveries, toiletries, gas and electric payments, among other things. It’s been humbling to hear some of the background stories of our service users. The service helps hundreds of people every day and it feels good to know that I’m part of that.
“Volunteering helps you feel a little bit more normal and gives you great satisfaction to know you’re making a difference in a time of need. If you’re thinking about it, go for it. You won’t regret it!”
