Explore outdoor summer activities
11 Aug 2020
Abbeycroft Leisure has launched two exciting projects to help combat holiday hunger and support disadvantaged children in the region.
Explore Outdoor Family Park Cooking has invited 700 disadvantaged families across West Suffolk, Babergh and Mid Suffolk, referred by schools, to attend a day including six hours of fun, structured, outdoor activity, a cooking lesson with top local chef, James Carn and menu planning – enabling families to make healthy and delicious meals using their free school meals vouchers.
The families are also given shopping lists and associated menus to enable them to buy and make healthy, fun and delicious meals using their free school meals vouchers.
Every family that attends will also receive a food parcel with restaurant quality local produce from local suppliers to take away at the end of the day. Online video tutorials have also been produced, to support their cooking progress at home using the recipe cards, and these have been made available to the public.
Explore Outdoor Adventure Days, are fully funded activity days, providing 200 child places across six locations. These are aimed at children entitled to free school meals, but also children that may have other needs identified by their schools, especially with the impact of COVID-19, such as bereavement, mental health, self-confidence and social isolation. The children will take part in a range of outdoor activities such as archery, shelter building and orienteering.
There’s also 10 places available each day for children whose families are able to pay and are looking for an action-packed healthy day of outside activity during the summer.
The projects has been made possible with funding from Suffolk County Council, through their Department of Education funded Holiday Activity & Food Programme, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils and support from West Suffolk Council, Accent Fresh, East Anglian Foods Ltd, The Infusion Group and grant-making support from Suffolk Community Foundation.
Frank Carn-Pryor, Sports and Outdoor Activity Officer for Abbeycroft Leisure said: “We’re very grateful to the Councils, the Department for Education and all our partners, who have worked extremely hard to make our summer projects a reality. Healthy food choices and activity are so important for the wellbeing of the whole family, and our sessions are designed to give families a chance to spend a few hours outdoors, having fun, learning and being healthy together.”
Councillor Paul West, Cabinet Member for Ipswich, Communities and Waste said: “The summer can often be a challenging time for families as they try to keep children occupied, happy and healthy, this will be especially true this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many children have missed out on time in school and have been impacted by lockdown so it is important that we can provide stimulating activities for them over the summer holidays.” Cllr Derek Davis, cabinet member for communities at Babergh District Council, said: “It is proven that exercise not only makes children happier and healthier, but it can also greatly improve concentration and lead to better achievement.
“This is why taking the time to get active as a family each day can help to secure better futures for our children. Cllr Julie Flatman, cabinet member for communities and housing at Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “Exercise is a powerful tool which can improve mood and reduce anxiety, both of which are even more important at what has been a stressful time for many families.
“I am delighted that Mid Suffolk will benefit from Explore Outdoor initiatives, allowing children to have fun whilst getting fit and fed."
Cllr Jo Rayner, cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Community Hubs at West Suffolk Council said: "Healthy and active families and communities are a priority for our council and this programme has the potential to make some real differences to quality of life, particularly at this time."
