GLL to deliver winter flu vaccinations
08 Dec 2020
GLL is partnering with Pharmacy2u and St John’s Ambulance to deliver free ‘drive through’ flu vaccinations for those who meet NHS eligibility criteria.
GLL managed facilities at West View (Preston), Rivermead (Reading), Peter May (London Play Fields Association at Waltham Forest) and Odd Down (Bath) will be used to facilitate the operation in their car parks – starting this month.
This year the flu vaccine is being offered free on the NHS to:
• adults 50 and over
• people with certain medical conditions (including children in at-risk groups from 6 months of age)
• pregnant women
• people living with someone who's at high risk from coronavirus (on the NHS shielded patient list)
• children aged 2 and 3 on 31 August 2020
• children in primary school
• children in year 7 (secondary school)
• frontline health or social care workers
They will also be offered at an affordable rate for anyone else.
Having the winter flu vaccination is important to guard against more serious illness and complications – especially for those with underlying health conditions. Keeping well reduces the strain on the NHS which is combatting COVID-19 virus.
GLL has been at the forefront of supporting community resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. As well as encouraging customers to maintain their fitness at home when centres have been closed, GLL has also mobilised furloughed workers to volunteer with local Community Hubs to support those shielding by delivering medicines and running food banks for the poor.
Staff in GLL’s Childrens Centres were kept on salary to provide childcare for keyworkers and GLL library personnel were retained to staff call centres and provide a home delivery service – described as a ‘lifeline’ to those isolating or in remote rural communities – and a ‘Click & Collect’ service for those who are able to visit a local library branch.
The ‘drive through’ service will commence at West View Leisure Centre on 25/11; Rivermead Leisure Complex and Gym 30/11; Peter May Sports Centre on 7/12 and Odd Down Sports Ground on 14/12.
Commenting on the vaccination partnership, GLL’s Head of Community Resilience Craig Parker said: “Leisure and physical activity plays a pivotal role in supporting public health during the pandemic and we are lobbying hard for the Government to keep leisure centres open in future lockdowns.
“In addition, we recognise the need to support the ongoing public health response to COVID-19 through our new partnership with Pharmacy2u and St John’s Ambulance.
“Taking the winter flu vaccine keeps many more people out of doctors’ surgeries and helps protect our NHS.
“As a leisure social enterprise it’s in our DNA to support local communities’ health and wellbeing and make sure Britons emerge from the winter and from this pandemic in the best condition possible.”
Leading the leisure sector in its role in the national recovery, GLL has moved hundreds of home fitness classes online during the pandemic via its Better_uk app offering expert-lead videos from ‘Abs’ to ‘Zumba’.
